How To Be Happy: Here Are My Secrets!

What does it mean to be happy?

I think this is one of those philosophical questions that has the potential to stump even the most intellectual philosophers. Happiness is the one emotion that gets such a bittersweet rep. I mean, everyone wants to be happy. But, happiness also seems to be the emotion that many of us grasp at, but can’t reach.

Unattainable by those who want it the most, right?

Being happy is much simpler than most of us realize. You don’t need the lit bank account, the dope clothes or car. In fact, there are 3 things you can do starting today that will make you happier.

Do The Things That Make You Happy. Stop Doing The Things That Don’t.

This is a simple simple thing, yet can be the hardest thing to implement in our lives. Societal norms, financial woes and familial pressures can all play critical roles in our decisions to follow our heart. Or not. Many of us may settle for a life we don’t want and believe that we must do things we don’t like because that’s life.

Guess what?

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Quitting the things that make you unhappy is a process easier said than done and I get that. If you’re lucky (or just stubborn) the Universe may just push you out of the situations that you need to leave behind. If you’re not, then you may wake up one day with all your faded memories of the past and the bitter taste of regret on your tongue. Eek.

Do yourself a favor and choose yourself. Choose your happiness, choose your passions and choose your path. Let your heart guide you. If it feels right, if it makes you happy in the moment, then keep doing it! It will lead you somewhere great!

If it drains you and the simple thought of doing it paralyzes you with dread, then leave it behind. Find a way, any way, to sever the ties between you and the things that do not cater to your joy in this life.

Be Patient With Yourself.

This one is probably one of the hardest ones for me because I can be so hard on myself. I set goals and when I struggle to reach them in a certain amount of time, I chastise myself. However, cruel words and downplaying your efforts in anything you have ever done is one of the worst things you can do to yourself.

Allow yourself to be patient, as I know you are with others. Nurture your soul and your mind and give yourself permission to take your time. Remind yourself that this is your journey and it is exactly what you make it. Practicing patience, with yourself and others, can be difficult at first. But, it is something that can serve such a great purpose in your life once you begin to implement it.

Understand Happiness Can’t Exist 100% Of The Time.

Y’all know that famous line at the beginning of the song Pretty Hurts (by Beyonce, hello!) where she goes “My aspiration in life is to be happy”. This used to be my aspiration too, until I learned that happiness is not an end goal. You can’t work hard, get everything you want and wake up one day happy, only to be happy for the rest of your life.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: you could not possibly understand what happy felt like unless you experienced sad, and mad, and cranky, and all the other emotions that exist. Happiness, like anger, sadness or the rest of them, is an emotion. And emotions are fleeting. This means that one day you can be happy and the next day you ca be sad. And guess what?

THAT’S OKAY!

Had to toss some caps in there to really nail my point, ya know? It’s such a simple fact, but one we often forget. It’s the reason so many of us question how celebrities or rich folk can be sad, ever. I mean, they have it all, so shouldn’t they be happy all the time? Nah *Chief Keef Voice*

Once you realize that happiness comes, and goes, it becomes easier to accept the moments where you experience other less desirable emotions. You’ll begin to understand that those are fleeting as well. And that, my friends, is a very awesome, very important secret to take note of.

I hope y’all have enjoyed this post on how to be happy. If you take one thing and one thing only from this post it would be this: visit the people who make you smile, play the songs that give you chills and do the things that bring you joy as much as you possibly can. We have one shot at this thing called life, so don’t fuck it up trying to live for anyone else but you.
